LINDA BURBACK, Natural History Staff, Top Picks & Other Essential Items
Baja California is an exceptional place, where the desert meets the sea!
Both of these environments can be harsh on naked eyeballs, which is why I recommend a pair of polarized sunglasses like the "Maverick" or the "Haven's by Smith" with a "safety cord" to help hang onto them. Whales diving right next to our ship are seen with an amazing clarity if you are wearing polarized glasses.
I also recommend the lightweight long-sleeved "Adventurer Sun Shirt" – it offers excellent coverage from the sun, dries quickly, and packs well.
Your feet are an important vehicle for exploration in Baja, and since this is where the desert meets the sea, you need a shoe that can handle both sea and sand. The "Men's & Ladies Aqua Terra by Teva" is my pick. It is a sturdy water shoe with a sole hard enough that a few cactus spines won't ruin your day if you happen to step on one.
Another of my top picks is a hat, because I strongly support sun protection! Baseball caps do not have enough coverage for daytime wearing (your ears stick out!), so I recommend the "Ladies Sport Hat". It is lightweight, has a broad brim to cover the delicate tops of your ears, and its light color reflects the sun.
Finally, for our daily shore excursions, I recommend all guests travel with a day pack. The "Dry Peak Ultralight Waterproof Day Pack" is perfect for carrying the day’s gear: binoculars, camera, water bottle, hat, sunscreen, and accessories like an extra memory card for the camera, extra batteries, and a bird field guide.
