LYNN FOWLER, Expedition Leader, Top Picks & Other Essential Items
I have worked in the magical Galapagos Islands for over thirty years. I got my PhD doing research there, watched my two kids learn to walk with a sailor's roll on the ships that tour the islands and even after all these years, Galapagos is my favorite place on earth.
Since the islands straddle the equator, the sun is strong and it is easy to burn. There is nothing more painful than sun burnt lips, so lip balm, like Sunsorb, is essential protection for visitors and scientists alike. A good sunscreen, like the Aquasport waterproof brand, is also extremely important. During the warm season, between January and May, one should not venture out in the sun without a generous application of both of these creams.
I never head out for a hike on the islands without a decent hat. The hat tail sun cap is a superb choice because the wide bill protects your face while the flap covers your neck. As we ride to shore in the Zodiacs, it can be quite breezy. The hat tail sun cap conveniently has a built-in clip that attaches to your collar; this has saved many from blowing off into the ocean.
I always hike in khaki shorts. The light weight "Bay Island" Shorts are my favorites. They are comfortable and cool and I love the zippered pockets. Rain or shine I go out in Bay Island shorts; if we are caught in the tropical rain they dry off within minutes once the sun comes out again.
