SHARON GRAINGER, Naturalist, Top Picks & Other Essential Items
I've been exploring/living in the Pacific Northwest my whole life; came here when I was one year old!
Here are my top picks for anyone planning to travel to this part of the world:
SAN JUANS/BC TRIPS
On Pacific Northwest trips that venture into the rain forest, my typical "uniform" is a base layer of yoga pants and a long-sleeved shirt, covered by my raincoat and rain pants. On colder days, I'll double layer (and when I’m driving in the ice I’ll have 3 layers on the bottom and 4 layers on the top!). On my feet I wear a pair of good warm socks and waterproof knee-high boots. It is worth the investment to find truly waterproof gear for these trips. I also have a good pair of binoculars in my bag for spotting things on shore, on cliffs, and in the surrounding waters. If you're passing through this area in September, be sure to bring a bathing suit, as there will sometimes be an opportunity to swim!
RIVER TRIPS
If you're traveling with us along the Columbia and Snake Rivers in the Spring, it can be very cool at night and in the mornings, and it heats up fast once the sun rises. To account for this range of temperatures, I recommend packing so you can dress in layers, remembering to bring a warm top layer for the cool hours. You will need a broad range of clothes that also includes a sun shirt, shorts, and a pair of good walking shoes.
If you're traveling with us along the Columbia and Snake Rivers in the Fall, you will need to be prepared for changeable weather. Our early season trips are pretty warm, but by the end of the season it is cold and we are dressed in fleece pants, warm boots, gloves/hat, and a warm jacket.
If you plan to do any kayaking on ANY of our Pacific Northwest trips, be sure to pack waterproof rain pants.
